Surgical implants are widely used in modern medicine but their effectiveness is often compromised by how our bodies react to them.
 
In this podcast episode, Marni will be speaking with Dr Donna Lee Marcal, the founder of Dermatonics.
 
Dr Marcal is a specialist in human Biochemistry with a doctorate from The University of Ottawa. She has worked in the area of inflammation and how the body reacts to foreign materials as well as macrophage biology related to Atherosclerosis. Dr Marcal has been awarded several international research fellowships for her work, including an Endeavour Research Fellowship awarded to her by Julie Bishop in 2006.
 
Upon her Sydney research visit, she investigated the human biochemistry pathways involved in inflammation using advanced proteomics. And the Australian story begins! Her work on specific human proteins and their functions on human inflammation enabled her with a Young Investigators Award from the World Human Proteomics Organization. She then moved to Australia to continue her advanced work at the Australian Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (Brisbane, QLD). She was then further awarded a research fellowship from the Canadian National Science & Engineering Research Council to work in Australia on her research. Dr Donna Lee Marcal is now the driving force of Dermatonics and its advanced Nutridermaceutical skincare.

Secondly, Dr Farhadieh is the Chief Editor of the critically acclaimed and internationally hailed reference textbook of plastic surgery: Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery: Approaches and Techniques. His own contributions were chapters on breast augmentation, eyelid and facelift surgery. Due to its great success, Dr Farhadieh has again been appointed Chief Editor of a New Edition scheduled for publication by 2020.

Areola Tattooing Following Breast Cancer with Aleisha Gannon

The areola is part of the human breast and plays a key role in the aesthetic look of a breast. Since a woman’s self-image can depend on the appearance of her breasts, a missing areola can be psychologically devastating. A woman can survive breast cancer after undergoing a mastectomy, and she can regain her figure with breast reconstruction. However, she may not feel “complete” without an areola. A woman can become emotionally distressed from a scarred areola as well. Patients feel the breast cancer tattooing process helps them during the last part of their recovery to look complete and feel “whole” and “normal” again.

The Truths About Vitiligo with Dr. Adrian Mar

Vitiligo is a disease in which the pigment cells of the skin, skin fading, melanocytes, are destroyed in certain areas. Jennifer’s teaching and research interest areas focus on the clinical and an interdisciplinary approach to dermal practice. Expertise and specialisation include clinical governance, standardising practice, Skin integrity and health, wound/scar and edema management.
 
Jennifer's qualifications include: BHSC (Clinical Dermal Therapy). BA (Architecture), Grad Dip (Wound Care), Grad Cert (Tertiary Education). Lecturer Dermal Science and Therapy (College of Health and Biomedicine) Victoria University and President of the Australian Society of Dermal Clinicians.
 
While most of the studies on lymphatic contractile function have been found in studies in mice, not humans it is interesting to watch for further evidence that will emerge with ICG imaging techniques.
